Lunch with Henry Roth

Roger (fabulous tie designer), Lui Hon from Project Runway season 1, Me, Henry Roth (Mentor on Project Runway) and Sarah from Style Melbourne. Not in the photo is Polkadot Bride.

Sometimes life is weird, good weird. I got invited to lunch with Henry Roth thanks to the lovely Sarah from Style Melbourne who read my last post about loving him. All I can say is it was a very funny surreal experience, and that Henry is very very passionate about fashion! We got some good ideas rolling, had an impromptu couture tie showcase and enjoyed the good food and atmosphere at Atomica Cafe in Fitzroy. After lunch Henry, Lui and I walked back to the city and bumped into my friend Chris from Corky Saint Clair who joined us on our stroll back into town.

Project Runway Australia

I am such a Project Runway Australia fan. Look at me, I even changed my uni degree's so that I could study where it was filmed (not 100% true as the course was perfect for me, but there was a part of me that really did just want to go to Whitehouse because of Project Runway). I have never watched the American version, so this is only the second series of PR for me to watch. I love Henry Roth (and have now shared a lift with him, stood beside him at the cafe next to uni but sadly never spoken to him except to say excuse me) and Kristy Hinze (who I never saw as they film her spots over at the ABC studios, only occasionally did she come to uni, and on those days we would all gossip trying to locate her). This season's contestants look amazing, but I still love the first seasons stars (Petrova honey, you will always be number one fave)

My favourite this season is Anthony Capon. Hailing from my home city, Melbourne (why have I never seen him around, he isn't hard to miss now is he? I'm sure in time I will meet him though, seems to be the way with me as I met my 3 favourites from last year, Petrova, Oren and Lui) His personal style is similar to my own, black, textural with elements of crazy fun. His dress this episode was the most interesting in terms of shape and texture, he seemed to be the only designer doing something different to what is already out there.

On runway day he wore this AMAZING floral neck piece that I am going to try to replicate ASAP. I'm obsessed with flowers right now, but using them in unusual interesting ways. I saw this amazing giant black fake flower at ClearIt on Brunwsick Street by Alannah Hill on the weekend and was so tempted to buy it. Unfortunatly it was $50, but I'm not kidding you, it was HUGE, like the size of a wok, and with floppy petals almost like fringing. I would wear it on my head or have like 10 around my neck in an ideal world where I have a job.

Just look at the flowers.

His final dress. This is a bad angle, but it was amazing. The draping, the cut and the asymetrical lines, not to mention that textured print, to die for.

Another contestant to look out for is Ivana Stipicic. Her resume is very impresive, having studied in Italy and worked for Costume National. Her dress was probably the most on trend and well made. I can't wait to see what she comes up with next.

In other news you may have noticed a new banner on my side bar.

I'm now contributing over at GXYsearch's blog. GXYsearch is a fashion recruitment agency who I think for myself and my readers are a useful bunch of people to know. They have insiders knowledge of the industry and how to get in and do what you want to do. I recommend checking out their website, facebook group and Twitter. Also please feel free to comment on their blog and ask any questions or suggest topics to talk about.

Romance was Born

Outfit details:
Romance was Born cape: $220
Tie dye t-shirt: Henry's so Free
Skirt: Savers $3
Leggings: Kinji Harajuku $9
Black patent oxfors: Dimmey's $9
Geometric necklace: Lola & Bailey from Alegorie $49
Belt: $50 from Japan

I wish my outfit post photos were better. They are always a rush job, at night after Henry finishes work before he gets too grumpy to take the photos. Hence the awful flash photography. Anyway here is my lovely birthday present from Henry, the Romance was Born snowflake cape. Finally got around to photographing me wearing it. Or rather it wearing me. It's just so long and large, and it really does look best when my arms are up in the air, so when I wear it I always try to make large gestures with my hands, haha. You can't always enter a room in an exaggerated way, but this cape makes me feel like a performer entering the stage and I act accordingly. To be honest it looks much better on the models I have styled wearing it, but that isn't going to deter me from putting it on. Working out what to wear underneath is a problem however, but I have found the perfect solution:

This amazing Gorman dress is on sale right now for only $100 down from $450. I have been asking Henry for the money, seeing if I can do some chores or something (geez louise I need a job) but sadly he hates the dress and won't give me the dosh for it. I'll come up with something though, as I am madly in love with it. $100 isn't even that much bloody money. I have never been jobless for so long, I've always been the one with the job in the relationship. Its so hard to not have my "economic freedom", its like being 8 years old again. I have a few things in the works though so hopefully something comes through and I can pay my own way from now on.

Nothing to see here

If you follow me on Twitter you would have already seen these photos. They are from a shoot I styled on Monday with the photographer Chris Polack. We did two different shoots on the one day. One was a more artsy creative shoot, which turned out amazing. The other was a portrait series with a rocky/punky vibe. Both very fun and different looks to style. You may recognise the model from the last photo, its Sheridan Seekamp from Make me a Supermodel. I never actually watched the show, but after she told me I googled it when I got home and watched an episode to look out for her. Is that normal behaviour? Or cyber stalking? Anyway at the shoot she was amazing, she really got into her character. It was so cool to see her work. Compared to other models I have worked with it was like she had been to posing bootcamp or something (which I guess the show was) because woah did she play up to the camera. Anyway I thought that was interesting, that maybe that type show does actually teach you how to model? The other models on the day were amazing too, but it was like Sheridan brought an extra something.

Can't wait till I get the results back to show you all.

Iconic

Madonna's infamous Sex book, 1992.

Lady Gaga for V magzine July/Aug 2009
Styling: Nicola Formichetti

As much as I love Lady Gaga, she is not and will not be the new Madonna, no matter how much she wants to be.

I am in love

With how HUGE the Make Believe Petal to the Metal necklaces actually are. The previous images made it difficult to judge the size, but wow these new shots show just how ferocious they truly are. How dead set amazing would these look on me? I love all three colours, the white is so innocent, the pink is so charming and the black is so naughty. I really feel that these necklaces have their own personalities, will they change the way you act and feel when you wear them?

Made to order

Olive & Finn is a new made to order label in Melbourne that I have just found, thanks to Emilia the model in their lookbook who just so happens to be the editor at Melbourne Street Fashion.com as well. All the Olive & Finn pieces are made to your measurements in your choice of colour and most pieces are around the $70 mark (or even less). How amazing is that? I especially love the oversized tank dress with fringe and the Gathered shoulder cardi. Looks like I have found a way to already spend my first pay cheque from my new job which starts today. It's really exciting how many new designers keep popping up, even during this "recession", its almost like there is even more creativity happening because of it.
